Mayor of Latest Canadian Town to be Hit for Online ‘Ransom’ Calls for National Strategy

Canadian municipalities are “sitting ducks” for “cyber terrorists,” says the mayor of Stratford, Ontario – the latest Canadian community to find itself targeted by an online ransom attack.

Investigators are still trying to determine exactly which information was seized in the attack. Stratford’s mayor wants to reassure residents that sensitive personal financial data were not compromised.

Cyberattacks targeting Canadian municipalities are becoming so commonplace that regional leaders are calling for a nationwide cybersecurity plan to address these threats.

Ohio Provider Pays $75K Ransom After Serious Hack on IT System

A urology clinic in Boardman, Ohio was hit by a ransomware attack, which affected its entire IT system and left all of its data encrypted. The hack was so severe that it took three days for staff to regain access to their computer systems.

This isn’t the first time a healthcare institution was hit by a ransomware attack. The healthcare industry continues to be an attractive target for hackers due to its need for constant access to its systems and patient data to ensure patient care is not interrupted.

The Highly Dangerous ‘Triton’ Hackers Have Probed the US Grid

Over several months, security analysts have been tracking a group of sophisticated hackers carrying out broad scans of dozens of US power grid targets, apparently looking for entry points into their networks.

Scanning alone hardly represents a serious threat. But these hackers, known as Xenotime—or sometimes as the Triton actor, after their signature malware—have a particularly dark history.

Learn more about Xenotime.
