Government Cyber Attacks & Fortinet Firewalls

Each week we’ll bring you an overview of the latest news in cloud computing, cybersecurity and industrial IoT over the past seven days. This week we’re focused on the latest news in government cybersecurity.

Elections Canada Chief warns political parties are vulnerable to cyber attacks

Canada’s Chief Electoral Officer is worried that political parties aren’t well equipped for the prevention of cyber attacks in this year’s federal election. He notes how political parties, large or small, lack the resources needed for the securing of computer systems.

Read more on how these risks could affect the upcoming election and what they mean for Canada’s cybersecurity.

Our neighbors across the pond are no strangers to cyber attacks either, as UK MPs experience malicious hacks targeting their contact lists and information.

Fortinet Introduces Intent-Based Next-Gen Firewalls

As existing security strategies are failing to keep pace with a complex security landscape, organizations are seeking adaptive and predictive protection that prevents the spread of threats throughout the network. Fortinet has tackled this need by releasing a family of next-generation firewalls that feature intent-based segmentation. With their system, an organization that needs extra levels of security around financial or medical databases, or needs to modulate its security posture, can do so efficiently and at comparatively low costs.

Fortinet has taken segmentation a step further and separate platforms are no longer necessary.

Foreign hackers targeting Canadian banks and government

Foreign hackers have targeted Canadian banks, mining companies, and government institutions in recent years in a bid to steal valuable secrets and spread malware. Canada is often one of the first nations targeted for new types of cyber operations due to its financial wealth, high-tech development and membership in NATO. The National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians will soon be establishing measures to counter these threats.

The cyber espionage threat to Canada is moderate but could be on the rise.

Australian government reports serious cyber-attacks

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) has revealed that over the last three financial years it responded to 1097 “cyber incidents” affecting both unclassified and classified government networks. The nature of the responses has varied and ranged from telephone conversations through to deployment of staff resources and tools to assist in mitigating the incident.

Computerworld elaborates on the consequences of these attacks and what the ASD found when investigating the cases.
