Each week we’ll bring you an overview of the latest news in cloud computing, cybersecurity and industrial IoT over the past seven days. This week we’re focused on cybersecurity after Brexit, AWS expansion and smart cities.
Mind the Brexit Gap in Cybersecurity
There has long been a strong partnership between the UK and Europe in cybersecurity. With the outcome of Brexit still uncertain, there is much debate about how these links will be maintained in the future. There are many areas where it is still unclear what will change, so organizations will need to make sure they are aware of new developments, understand the implications for their business and respond quickly.
One area in doubt is the level to which EU cyber-related standards will continue to apply in the UK.
AWS to Open New Region in Indonesia
A new AWS Asia Pacific (Jakarta) Region will arrive by the end of 2021, enabling customers to run workloads in Indonesia and serve millions of end-users across Asia-Pacific with even lower latency. According to Peter DeSantis, Vice President of Global Infrastructure and Customer Support at AWS, this opening will “support the country’s fast-growing startup ecosystem, large Indonesian enterprises, and government agencies by helping drive more technology jobs and businesses, boosting the local economy, and enabling organizations across all verticals to lower costs, increase agility, and improve flexibility”.

Cyber-attacks ‘damage’ national infrastructure
The Ponemon Institute, which specializes in cyber-security and privacy issues, used an anonymous poll to quiz more than 700 security professionals in the US, UK, Germany, Australia, Mexico, and Japan who work to protect critical infrastructure. Of those responding, nine out of 10 said the organization they worked for had been damaged by a successful cyber-attack in the last two years. Many reported being hit by between three and six such incidents. Respondents said around half of the successful attacks had resulted in downtime of critical systems.

Smart Cities to Generate $20 Trillion in Economic Benefits by 2026
A report on the economic development of smart cities has revealed the smart city concept could boost the economic development of global cities by more than 5%, delivering at least $20 trillion in additional economic benefits by 2026. The huge numbers demonstrate that the economic impact of smart cities has gained momentum, as technological advancements and innovations come to the fore.

The Future of Cybersecurity in a 5G-Connected World
The IT community has been speculating over the implications of 5G’s launch, questioning what exactly it means for the cybersecurity landscape. In less than a year, two-thirds of organizations plan to deploy 5G; however, the connective power of 5G means a greater number of network endpoints, resulting in more possible openings through which an attacker may penetrate the network. Because of these new risks, it is imperative that organizations prepare for a fresh wave of cyber threats, set to be unleashed on an already vulnerable environment.
Learn how to adopt a risk-based approach to 5G security.
Health Care’s Huge Cybersecurity Problem
Reports show that ransomware and other cyberattacks are on the rise — and health care is one of the biggest targets. Despite the rising threat, the vast majority of hospitals and physicians are unprepared to handle cybersecurity threats, even though they pose a major public health problem. The health care industry increasingly relies on technology that’s connected to the Internet: from patient records and lab results to radiology equipment and hospital elevators. Although efficient for patient care, those technologies are often vulnerable to cyberattacks.
