BC Hydro System Faces Cybersecurity Threats: Auditor General
British Columbia’s Auditor General has reported that BC Hydro could be susceptible to cyberattacks. With the system providing power to 95% of British Columbians, the system is considered critical infrastructure. This is not the only vulnerable industrial system: the Norwegian aluminum producer, Norsk Hydro, was struck by an extensive cyberattack this week.

MySpace Apologizes After Losing 12 Years’ Worth of Music
MySpace experienced a loss potentially amounting to 50 million songs following a server migration error, although some reports are skeptical this was an accident. MySpace has credited the mistake to a server migration where files were corrupted and unable to transfer over to their updated site.
MySpace announces there is no way to recover any of the lost data.
Slack Hands Over Control of Encryption Keys to Regulated Customers
Slack announced that it is launching Enterprise Key Management (EKM) for Slack, a new tool that enables customers to control their encryption keys in the enterprise version of the communications app. The new tool should appeal to customers in regulated industries who might need tighter control over security.

Gigabit Connectivity Options for Amazon Direct Connect
AWS Direct Connect gives you the ability to create private network connections between your datacenter, office, or colocation environment and AWS. It also encompasses three distinct models: Dedicated Connections, Hosted Connection, and Hosted Virtual Interfaces. Amazon has announced an upgrade on Hosted Connections with 1, 2, 5, or 10 Gbps of capacity. These capacities will be available through a select set of AWS Direct Connect Partners who have been specifically approved by AWS.

VMware Cloud on AWS Now Available on Canadian Soil
VMware and AWS announced a partnership in 2016 and now are extending that to Canadian customers who prefer their data be kept north of the border. The partnership is a recognition that many enterprise firms are operating infrastructure with a hybrid cloud model. While more workloads are moving to the public cloud, not all workloads are deemed appropriate to operate beyond an internal data center.
VMware’s virtualization suite of software enables firms to operate their own environment in the same cloud style of consumption.
